Cara Canary

Cara Canary

ACTRESS

Cara Canary discovered acting at the age of 10 in a short summer program studying "The Hobbit". She became fascinated with Gollum and spent hours mimicking the voice & characteristics of the quirky creature. She was chosen to play Gollum and simultaneously was bitten by the acting bug. Soon after, Cara was requested to audition in the University of Texas' MainStage production of "The Scarlet Letter", and was cast as "Pearl Prynne". She was fortunate enough to meet & work with one of few professors in the USA with a PhD in Nathaniel Hawthorne studies, and consequently received several favorable media reviews for her performance. Among her reviews are "the strongest standout of this phenomenal cast is Cara" (Broadway World Austin); "she owned the stage like she has been acting for years" (Tess & Company); "Cara was incredible to watch and most entertaining" (Ask Miss USA); "the impressive 5th grader Cara"(Austin360.com). The Austin Area Critics nominated Cara for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role"(2013) and Broadway World Austin nominated her for "Best Actress Under 18" and "Best Featured Actress in a Play" (2013). Cara received a coveted B. Iden Payne award for her role as "Annie" in TERMINUS in 2016. Cara particularly enjoys working with live playwrights in developing new plays. After working together on one such project, Director Anne Kauffman (NYC) requested Cara to audition for a role in her upcoming play at the Vineyard in NYC calling her "splendid". Cara has acted in several local films in and around Austin including "Pushing Out Daisy", "Ellika", "Land of Memories", "Pinned", "When I'm Old", "The Pyramids", and "Sela". She has also done voice over work in the psychological thriller, "Mara's Mind". Recently she played "Louise Stratten" in the Reelz cable show "Murder Made Me Famous: Playmate Edition" (2017). When she is not acting, she can be found singing, dancing, studying, writing music, or surfing in foreign countries. She speaks some Mandarin, Spanish (Latin American accent), and is learning ASL.
