Gregory Cupoli was born and raised in the suburbs of New Jersey. He was trained as an actor by the renowned William Esper at Mason Gross School of the Arts within Rutgers University, where he received his BFA in Acting. Described by Esper as a "talented and charming performer", his thesis role while at the university was that of Tajomaru in the stage production of "Rashomon." His performance was hailed by the press, which said he "played the bandit with fierce, animalistic passion almost like a man driven by demons, yet he never over-acted or over-romanticized his part. A solid performance by a talented young artist!" During the summer of 1981, while performing with The Rutgers Theatre Company, he created the role of Fifi LaBella in the English Language premiere of Pirandello's "Cap and Bells."
